Lead By Example

Sometimes my role as a connector requires me to have hard conversations when it comes to the referral process. Sometimes it requires holding people accountable for referrals I send them. I am always a little hesitant to provide constructive feedback because I don’t want them to think I’m ever trying to micromanage the referral process or that I’m trying to tell them how to do their job. My business philosophy is to SHOW people how to do referrals well rather than just speak about it. When you live your life as an example of something, it speaks much louder then droning on as if in a lecture hall in college.

I had to provide constructive feedback yesterday and must admit I crossed my fingers hoping my colleague wouldn’t be offended. I hope you can visualize the smile across my face as I breathed a sigh of relief as I read this…

“Ginger, I am extremely thankful for your feedback and also very thankful for the authentic and novel way you help me with referrals. I understand the importance of a referral because it is the only way I get my clients. I also understand now more than ever, by knowing you a bit more, and the way you have built your name with true and responsible referrals. I am learning so much from you, your life and the way you do business.”

Oh, and by the way, this person isn’t even a member of The Referrals Group. I say that because I care more about my relationships in the business community as a whole, not just if you happen to be a member of the organization I work for. I look for good people who are good at what they do to refer to. Period. There is no agenda. There is no pressure. Treat me right. Treat my referrals right, and acknowledge me every once in awhile, and we will always be good.

Thank you to the colleague who encouraged me today and who I know will continue to treat our relationship and our referrals between each other well. You make me want to continue being better.
