Clouds & Visions

Near the 45th Parallel of Latitude halfway between the Equator and North Pole in Yellowstone Park

The picture above isn’t the experience I’m about to tell you about as I didn’t have my phone with me, but I’m using it for context and imagery.

I’m currently writing a reflection paper for my Old Testament Genre class. I have selected Psalms 42 and have been asked to share my insights and questions as I read through Aviya Kushner’s commentary from her book The Grammar of God.

She provided a literal Hebrew translation of verse 3 which reads in English, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When will I come and be seen by the face of God?”

While I’m not using the following in my paper, I wanted to share what immediately to mind. I was reminded of something that happened to me September 5 of this year while I was in Gig Harbor, WA. I’ve hesitated to share it with my Facebook family because I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to “visions or hearing from God.” There’s a lot of marketing and hype that goes into that (just turn on the TV to the religious stations), and frankly, I don’t want to be considered crazy 🤣 But a few friends have encouraged me to do so as it might speak to someone and today just seemed to give me the green light as I read that verse, so here goes…
I went outside at sunset and sat in the side yard which has the greenest, lushest grass. A cool breeze was blowing in from crystal blue water, and the sky above was equally as blue with a huge cloud formation that looked like an expansive heart that spanned the sky from front to back.

I started praying and telling God it’s getting harder and harder to hear and discern truth anymore. Would He please just show up to let me know He still sees me, sees us, sees those who really want to pursue Him despite all their fully human traits that can often be so ugly.

I look up and immediately He shows me distinct objects in the clouds…

💫 a sword like you’d see at a Knight’s roundtable
💫 a dove
💫 an angel flying at warp speed
💫 the face of Jesus (as I understand it to be) but hidden within this huge heart. He didn’t dominate it.

As I asked Him was He still hanging onto me and all of us who still have sins that easily beset us no matter how many times we try to rise above, does He really stick around for us?

The clouds at that point began to dissipate. There were no more definitive outlines, but rather a clearing expanse that had lots of room for the weather to change and for new things to enter that space.
Again, don’t look for these images in the picture as you won’t find them. I realize now I wasn’t supposed to take that picture. I was supposed to stay right where I was in His presence. I waited for the clouds to roll away, and they did.

If you know Him, He’s got you. He doesn’t forsake. He doesn’t leave.

I won’t interpret the images as they may mean something completely different for you, but for me, they gave me great hope amd answered several questions I’d had lingering around in my head.

My challenge for you: look up. Ask. Pray. There might be an answer other than what you think and not what you’d expect. I believe it’s always in the unexpected that we find true beauty and joy.

What do you think?
